Beautiful place with lovely people. Good range of shops although only a few. The new Museum is definitely worth viewing but quite pricey. Stunning bird life and scenery. Totally awesome place and people.
Very peaceful and quaint area that is brilliant for walking to see stunning scenery and enjoy the wildlife. Lots of well made pathways and with the island roads being quiet it was easy to explore the numerous beautiful sandy bays. I will definitely come back to enjoy more of this fabulous area.
We loved Stewart Island and our travel by ferry to Half Moon Bay. We ate several meals at South Sea Restaurant. Delicious! Several walks, beaches and sights were within easy walking distance. We took a taxi from our accommodations to Golden Bay for our Beaks and Feathers Tour to Ulva Island which we would highly recommend. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the island, the birds and trees.
Great place. I would have liked more time to do more walks. We stayed 2 nights - just enough to do a kiwi experience and visit Ulva Island. We were unlucky with no Kiwi sightings. But the longer walks would have green goid to do if we had more time.
The township of Oban is the place to find out most info, access e-bikes and get details of walks, kiwis, trips to places such as Ulva Island. It’s the central township for the island. Glad it has a four square, friendly people at the Doc site. Butterfield Bay is gorgeous.
You don't need to spend money on tours if you don't have it (I never do), as there are plenty of beautiful walks to discover for yourself. Ulva Island is a must, though!!! The bird life is amazing, and even though at home we have plenty of kereru, piwakawaka, bellbirds, the song and sight of these guys over there is next level. Kereru, walking or sitting on the ground, is not seen in cities. Do take sandfly spray as these wee guys are also very friendly 😉
