A 9min drive from Invercargill it was the right choice for us. We found the cabin & facilities excellent. Invercargill was extremely underwhelming for us so we're so glad we chose to stay close to the beach which was very cool! There is a 4 square, a cafe/restaurant very close to the accommodation
So much to do, beautiful gardens, great swimming facilities. New shopping complex with all the shops a large city has without the large crowds. Several eateries. Well laid out city, double lanes with light traffic. Excellent transport museum. E Hayes store has bike history for The World's Fastest Indian fans. Nearby Riverton is great on a warm day.
Invercargill sits at Latitude 46 Degrees South & is the closest CITY to Antartica. It's a large City that offers a multitude of things to do & places to see. There's the old Port Town of Bluff, it's Maritime Museum, cafes & of course the World Renown Bluff Oyster, but you have to be there when it's Oyster season & they are dredging the Foveaux Straits for the delicious seafood treat. Try May-August for this experience. Check out Transport World, it's the Disney Land for Vintage cars, trucks, buses, tractors you name it & it's there. Just like Disney Land it'll take you more than a day to see everything it has to offer, Tip:- DON'T RUSH. Ascot & Riverton Race courses are nearby for the lovers of The Sport Of Kings, with Riverton hosting The BIG EASTER CARNIVAL each year. Want to see a fast MOTOR BIKE then go & view the WORLD's FASTEST INDIAN in the City whilst mum does the shops & Mall over. One thing Invercargill has that many World Cities envy is FRESH CLEAN AIR, yes the breezes off the Southern Ocean sometimes may get a wee brisk, but those same breezes refresh & stimulate your senses. COME & TRY IT, you may just be surprised.
Highlights of Invercargill were the friendly people and good dining. The Transport Museum was outstanding, as was Queens Park. The city itself is quite ugly, treeless and windswept, with few attractive buildings. Good for a short stay or transit stopover.
Discovering Queens Park and The Cheeky Llama Cafe. Beautiful scones. Taking a drive down to Bluff and the yummy blue cod from the Bluff Kitchen Food Truck. Exploring the Transport Museum, Motorbike MECCA and E Hayes for the World's Fastest Indian
Invercargill is one of those places people like to think that they wouldn't miss anything if they didn't go, but I'd offer a different view. I've made more than 30 trips to New Zealand in my lifetime so far, both North and South islands. This was my first time in Invercargill. First, if you're a foodie, you have got to come here. Restaurants abound, you will find everything here from traditional to fusion, and boy is it good! I had some of the best Thai food here I've ever encountered. Second, if you're an avid motorcyclist like me, you must go and see Burt Munroe's machine at E Hayes & Sons Hardware store, then, check out Motorcycle Mecca and the Cafe' there. It's every bikers dream to have a garage like this. Third, take a day trip out to Bluff and take in the view (not much else is going on there unfortunately), but after that take the long road through the Catlins Coast rain forrest from there up to Dunedin, and you'll find some unique places and views along the way that you'll take with you forever.
