South of the Dona Ana hotel, a large hotel on a peninsular, is a 5km stretch of wondeful beach. White soft sand at high tide, 200 metres of golden sand when the tide is out. Not the best for swimming ut there are some comfortable small pools as the tide goes out. No sunbeds and umbrellas here, just local fishermen going about their business. A couple of small low key nice hotels offering beach front accommodaion and food.
North of the Dona Ana the beach is less tidal, several larger more modern hotels with very nice restaurants. but the beach is not as pretty with seaweed sometimes and broken shells meaning walk with sandals not barefoot.

Typical of Mozambique. It's a poor area so if you are prepared for rural surrounds you will not be disappointed. Locals are friendly and the lodge took us shopping for provisions as and when we needed it. Great place to relax. Super diving, snokelling, fishing and swimming. Very close to the islands.

Definitely recommend. It's a beautiful place. Vilanculos is very laid back, natural and authentic. The beaches are amazing, delicious local food and some great outdoor activities to do. Visiting the islands like Bazaruto is highly recommended. These areas are truly pristine and the snorkeling along two mile reef is awesome. I would say more or less 6 days is enough time in the area. We went in September (not in season) and sometimes it would just be us on the beach with one or two other people.
