Highly recommend Totonou Guest House. We stayed for two weeks in this beautiful part of Hokkaido. The accommodation is very relaxed and an excellent home away from home to explore the quieter sides of the island. Ryuichi and Chiharu are excellent hosts, super lovely and friendly. You can ask them anything and they gave us so much local advice! The kitchen is great if you like to cook. It is also a good place for remote work, with a dedicated workspace and fast internet speed if needed. Other useful things… there is a train station and Seicomart close by and Ryuichi’s Mum and sister sell delicious onigiri two houses along!!!
Thank you so much for our wonderful time, we hope we can come back soon!!!

I was the only guest staying there and it seemed like I was the only person at first, but I realize that the staff were very responsive and willing to help if anything came up, regardless of how isolated the location seemed. I had the entire facility to myself but I found it very cosy and clean, and it perfectly met my needs for a good and restful stay in Higashikagura for two nights.

The house is quite spacious, we had max 9 people staying at a stage. The customer service was good and prompt. Although we’ve never seen the owner in person, but when we had a question, we get a prompt solution almost straight away. Almost every room had a heater, so it was warm, although the small heater had a time limit so we had to wake up to switch it on again every now and then. The kitchen has only simple cooking utensils and dishes, no oil and salt those kind of ingredients. We managed to park 2 Delica cars in the front, one has to park tightly, but it was easily manageable. There’s a small washing machine, we bought our own detergent cos we had to wash everyday. There is no dryer but there’s an automatic hanging place, which dries almost overnight cos of the heater. So it is better than using a heater. Enough hangers for all washings. The bathroom was big with a big sized bath!

What a wonderful house. Very comfortable and the kitchen is so thoughtfully well stocked. It’s located walking distance from family mart/ train station and hence very convenient. Surroundings are quiet and peaceful. Before check in, very clear instructions were sent and everything worked like clockwork!

We were there on 3rd week of Sep 2023 but somehow perhaps due to climate change, the autumn leaves didn’t feature . So I would recommend 1st week of October to visit. Regardless the Asahidake Ropeway did offer great views and the Sugatame Pond trap walk was most enjoyable with good views.

Biei was central for where we wanted to go - cycling to see autumn leaves, Mt Asahidake Ropeway and Shirogane Blue Pond.
One, there are a few bicycle rental shops in close proximity (all are similarly priced). Unless you are young and fit and ambitious, you will NOT be able to pedal the power-assisted bicycle to ALL the recommended places. We set aside 4 hours to comfortably visit 4 places. (Please set to the lowest assist mode if you want the battery to last for 4 hours).
Two, the drive up to Mt Asahidake was magical as it started to snow. We were hoping it will not snow too heavily for the drive down. The snow was too blinding for even a short hike. (The forecast was accurate).
Three, if one has the time, one should visit Shirogane Blue Pond in the daytime and night time. We arrived (5 pm) just as the last tourist bus was leaving. Twenty minutes are ample for a few rounds of the night lighting.

We loved Asahikawa, a very fun little city with a huge variety of bars and restaurants, easy access to local ski resorts, lots to see and do, and just a really fun, friendly vibe. Was a nice change after the hectic pace of Niseko. We will return next year and give ourselves a bit more time to have a really good look around (could do with 7 nights - our stay was 4 nights). Enjoyed the bonus of the winter festival being on during our stay, with spectacular ice sculptures the whole length of the main street, plus a big festival zone with activities, a huge ice stage, and dozens of food vans. We will be back for sure.

Travel books and blogs talk of Biei's famous Blue Pond, Shiragano Waterfalls, Takushinkan, various famous trees and observatories. But Biei is much more than that. It is a perfect scenic, serene getaway from busy city life. You don't actually need to plan and follow your itinerary to the point. Just roam around, whether on bicycles or in a rented car. Soak in the brisk air. Fumble into random cafes and restaurants. Biei is just so humble and modest, and yet very satisfying.

Loved the smaller village vibe.
Loved the smaller village vibe. As my second trip to japan i was intentionally trying to escape the tourist areas and english speakers / english content.
Finally found it in Asahikawa. It's the size of city where you still have services not the best and presence of other languages really starts to fall off.
The ice festival was clearly the main attraction here and i mis timed my stay not staying over the weekend when it really kicks off.
The zoo is the other main attraction with very little english content and a fun penguin walk, though i had a very busy crowd when i went.
There are a lot of museums though none, that interested me but it's not my cup of tea. So to each their own.
The commercial street had tons of decoration for the festival which was super fun as well as an ice sculpting competition which i also missed 😅.
Transport is well supplied in terms of access. Being a smaller town though, schedules start to be important to plan. You might get more chances around rush hour but outside of that you may end up waiting an hour if you miss that bus / train.
I was only there a couple of days, but loved the vibe and ambiance. Much less touristy, less to do obviously, more rural and much closer to japanese culture.
I crossed a fox, proof wildlife still exists in this town. Hopefully this doesn't frighten anyone, we live in a world with wildlife. Nothing made me happier than seeing this in the evening with beautiful fluffy falling snow. For me it's right up there as a highlight of my trip, right next to Niseko United for less than 20% of the price.

This is an excellent winter location - lots of snow, lots of ski opportunities at nearby resorts and towns. We were there during the amazing world ice-sculpture competition which was beautifully lit at night , and also an ice rink is set up in the square for day and night skating.
