Great location for late flight arrivals or early flight departures but we couldn't recommend a stay there.
The onsite restaurant was unexpectedly closed for the "holidays" and we weren't warned up front. This would have been simple enough given that our booking was made months ago.
The aircon wasn't adjustable and couldn't be switched off. It was an absolute icy blast. We were freezing cold all night and had to use towels as extra bed covers and wear additional clothes in bed.

Almeria is not too touristy I would say, and most people did not speak english, but we managed to get by.
The city has enough to keep you occupied for a couple of days and the buses work well to travel down the coast, also very reasonably priced.
food was average but drink was relatively cheaper compared to other cities in Spain we have visited.
The promenade and beach walk is nice, perhaps a little far out of old town, but bars to stop at frequently allow you a rest in between.

El Cabo de Gata is amazing!
El Cabo de Gata is amazing! It's one of my favourite places in Spain. It's a natural park with lots of cosy small towns and most beaches are set in a natural landscape so you have to make sure you take your own food and drinks with you, depending on which beach you choose.
My favourite ones were playa El Cabo de Gata, playa Las Salinas, and of course Los Genoveses and Monsul (you have to get there really early in the morning to get a spot because they have controlled access during the summer).
We did snorkelling and I wish I had better equipment with me because there are lots of fishies under those waters and they come really close to you!
And I highly recommend doing a boat tour. We took our from Playa de las Salinas and we got in a small motorboat and had a ride around El Cabo. We had a guide who explained what we were seeing, had a stop for a quick swim and got an adrenaline rush!
One last thing, if you go to El Cabo de Gata, please don't litter.Always take your rubbish with you. It crushed my heart to see the amount of rubbish people leave behind. There were lots of plastic bags, cans, cigarette buts and all sorts of rubbish.

Aguadulce is a nice district; the hotel is not far from a supermarket, not far from the beach and not far from a taxi stand to go to airport of Almeria. The road which leads from Almeria to Aguadulce is in very good conditions. The Tourist Office is very helpful. The park is clean, well kept and has very interesting tropical and hot weather plants and flowers. There is plenty to explore if one wishes to move around... bars and cafeterias have a good variety of offerings.

Small and quiet place. Very new, constructions are going. Would be great to have more greens around. Close to Almería, so it takes only 15-20 minutes to the downtown.
It’s also 25-30 minutes from Mini Hollywood and Fort Bravo.
Would like to return for the caves visit (seems there are 4-5 interesting caves around) as well as huge national park with many spots to visit.

Almería city is compact and easy to get around on foot.
Almería city is compact and easy to get around on foot. It is very Spanish, something that as a Spanish-speaker I appreciate.
In addition to the places usually highlighted in guides, we very much enjoyed el Museo del Realismo Español Contemporáneo which had two temporary exhibitions in addition to its excellent permanent collection.
The Enclave Arqueológico de la Puerta de Almería is also worth a visit to view the excavated gate and walls of the early Moorish city, together with some interesting Roman remains.
The range of restaurants available is huge. Our favourites were La Consentida Braseria; Restaurante Quatro Hojas, and Almedina Baraka (close to the Alcazaba).

So far as I could tell, Retamar is a tourist urbanization consisting mostly of hotels; a golf course and miles of beachfront. There were one or two retail outlets, such as corner shops or pharmacies, but there did not seem very much there to get stuck into. Hiring a car might be advisable if you want to get out and see something interesting.

Almeria was so unexpected we have passed through on many occasions and didn't realise what we were missing.
The people of Almeria are among the friendliest I have ever met in a City or anywhere for that matter.
We can not wait to return and explore as much as we can.
Because of our circumstances we mainly ate in the hotel. But we did on several occasions eat out. There is a very good Asian and a very good Spanish restaurant very close by and a lovely friendly cafe across the road from the hotel. For those like fast food the 5min walk to the Mediterranean Shopping Centre would make you very happy.
There is an excellent bus service to travel around the city.
