Wonderful place with many things to see, and the people are friendly, and warm! Definitely go there, and plan in advance to see as much as possible. The city cards help a lot. Maybe add in a quick trip to Amsterdam also, it’s worth it!
Wow! What can I say about Antwerp, well, behind some of the "brutalist" buildings you will find a a beautiful and friendly city. The old town is beautiful and the Station has to be one of the finest in the world, it's incredible.
Really enjoyed the Museum aan de Stroom and the Cathedral. Tram system works well for getting around. Traffic through the Kennedy tunnel and round the ring road was awful (perhaps partly due to the closure of the Waasland tunnel).
Lovely laid back city. We went to see the James Ensor artworks at the KMSKA - Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and spent most of the day there as there is so much to see. Although James Ensor was born and lived in Oostende, he left much of his art to the gallery. Be prepared to walk as the ares of interest can be quite far apart. There is a tram system although we didn't use it.
Antwerp: A City of Gritty Modernism and Missed Connections Antwerp is often hailed as Europe’s diamond capital and a fashion powerhouse, but my experience of the city was far more subdued. While it boasts undeniable historical importance, it may not be the ideal destination for those seeking the traditional charm or lush landscapes often associated with Belgian cities. The Urban Landscape The first thing that strikes you is the scale. Unlike the cozy, human-centric layouts of its neighbors, Antwerp feels dominated by owering structures and imposing architecture. While impressive in their own right, these buildings often create a sense of "urban heaviness" that can feel overwhelming rather than welcoming. Aesthetics and Atmosphere The city struggles with a noticeable lack of color. The palette is largely industrial, dominated by grey stone and modern steel. For a visitor looking for vibrant streets or quaint, colorful facades, the visual monotony can be a bit draining. Furthermore, if you are looking for a breath of fresh air, you might be disappointed. There is a distinct lack of greenery within the central urban fabric. The absence of parks and "green lungs" makes the city feel like a concrete jungle, where nature takes a backseat to commerce and port-side industry. Antwerp is a city for those who appreciate a raw, avant-garde, and industrial vibe. However, if your travel style leans toward picturesque views, vibrant colors, and natural spaces, you may find the city a bit cold and uninviting. It is a functional, busy metropolis, but it lacks the "soul" and softness found elsewhere in Flanders.
Antwerp is a friendly city - easy to use public transport - lots of interesting architecture. The museums - we visited MAS and KMSKA - are excellent - and have good activities for children. I highly recommend them.
