Having visited Ayers Rock 40 years ago the entire handling of mass tourism has dramatically altered today's experience. This area is no longer affordable/accessible for the average Joe - a meal for four at the main restaurant is over $250! Tours are run by a large organization and cost $$$ Because of the excessive heat, you are really limited to early morning or late afternoon outdoor excursions and a trip to Kings Canyon (which is a real must) is also expensive and requires at least a day or two.

Uluru and the Red Centre have to be seen to be believed. Yulara resort is extremely well set up to help visitors make the most of their time. We had a car but there are plenty of other options for getting around. A variety of venues available for food and beverages.

It was our first experience of the red centre and I was struck by the beauty of the landscape particularly in the soft light of dawn and sunset and the stillness …and a big night sky I hadn’t ever experienced before. There really is a Milky Way !!
